Wash and Wag Training Classes

Basic Obedience Training is one of the best things you can do for your dog or puppy.. and yourself.
Obedience training doesn't solve all behavior problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any problem.
Training opens up a line of communication between you and your dog. Effective communication is necessary to instruct
your dog about what you want her to do. You can teach her anything from 'stay' (don't bolt out the door)
to 'sit' (don't jump up on visitors) or to 'off' (stop what you're doing and move away or just leave-it).
The key to preventing or treating unwanted behaviors is learning to teach your dog to redirect his natural instinctive
behaviors to outlets that are acceptable in our domestic setting.

All classes will utilize Positive Reinforcement training methods.
We will only use dog-friendly, reward-based methods. No force or punishment or any of the old-fashioned methods of
jerking, pulling, or hurting your dog to make them comply are used. Training in a positive way, using food  rewards,
toys and praise, leads to a better-trained, happier dog. Plus, you will build a loving and trusting relationship with your dog.
You and your dog will enjoy training together because it's fun .. and that means you will train more often!

Puppy Socialization Class -  4 Week class
The objective of socializing your puppy is, simply put, to help them handle stress
in a variety of situations. Stress can lead to snarling and biting, and it can cause other anxious
behaviors or even health problems for your dog.
A puppy's socialization period lasts from
approximately 7 to 16 weeks of age. During this time, a puppy develops the
seek-avoidance blueprint  she will use for the rest of her life when encountering novel items.
Since obedience can be taught at any time, this class emphasizes socialization and manners!

* Name recognition  * Desensitizing to: Wheels & Sounds, People, Handling  * Bite Inhibition
               * Managing the Chewing Machine  * Crate Training  * House Training  * Preventing Resource
                  Guarding  * Name Recognition

foundations for behaviors that are essential to having a polite, well mannered family
dog. Things that you and your dog will learn together include:
               * Sit  * Down  * Stand * Stay *  Wait  * Loose-leash walking  * Settle  * Touch (target)  * Come
               * Attention: Name Recognition and Look  * Off/Leave-it * Handling (for vet visits, grooming, etc)

        *
Intermediate Level - Teaching TRICKS - 4 Week class
This class  requires that your dog has a good foundation
of the SIT, SIT/STAY, DOWN  and DOWN/STAY commands

Many tricks can be used to "re-direct" behaviors such as jumping up on
visitors (Sit and Wave or Play Dead). Come in and have some fun with your dog and build on the
reliability and control of the sit, stay and down commands.
               * All tricks will be detailed step-by-step.
                * While in class you will learn to teach your dog:
                * The Shake, Wave, High Five
                * Bow, Play Dead, Roll Over, Spin

Canine Good Citizen Class - 6 Week Class - PRE-REQUISITE - Solid Basic Obedience Behaviors
In this class your dog will practice and learn the 10 test requirements needed to pass the National CGC Test
                   *
To sit politely during greetings, petting, and examination
                   *
To walk politely on a loose leash, including through a group of people
                   * To recognize and respond to the cues sit, down, stay, and come
                   * To react politely to nearby dogs on leash
                   * To better cope with visual and sound distractions

               * To maintain good manners on leash while you are out of sight

      * The 3-D's Class - Duration, Distractions and Distance - 3 Week Class

This class will focus on learning how to build your dog's reliability of their sit-stays and down-stays.
We often introduce duration, distractions and distance to our dogs' sit & down-stays before they are ready for them.
Often, we feel that because they sit for us inside by the cookie jar, that they will sit for us outside with other
dogs running around. Or when we ask them to sit-stay and then walk away, we expect them not to move.
When they don't sit or down stay, we usually think that they are just being "stubborn". When in fact, they never were "taught"
the "in-between" steps to shape the behavior into a behavior that is "understood" by our dogs.

In class you will learn how to shape your dog's sit & down-stays first with adding duration to their sit & down-stays,
then how to add in distractions and finally howto introduce distance to the behavior. Learning these step will help build reliabilty and
          consistency to your dogs behaviors.

Loose Leash Walking & Recall - 5 Week Class
This class will focus on loose leash walking and addressing issues while walking your dog in public,
in addition to developing a positive, fun and reliable
recall with your dog . Two weeks will be spent on each behavior.
          You will train inside and
outside at Wash and Wag. On the 5th week, we’ll meet at the local park and put it all together!
